About RTI
Response to intervention (RTI) has been recommended by the U.S. Department of Education as a promising technique for preventing early learning problems. In recent years, RTI research and implementation programs have been conducted in early reading across Texas.
Through funds from the Texas Education Agency, The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk (MCPER) at The University of Texas at Austin has been studying the effects of extending this RTI model into early mathematics instruction.
Projects
The Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk (MCPER) at The University of Texas at Austin is currently pursuing three projects related to early mathematics intervention:
- Intervention Scale-Up Project
- Bilingual Intervention Scale-Up Project
- Focus on Mathematics Schools Project
Intervention Scale-Up Project
This school year, 2009-2010, 15 schools are participating in the implementation of assessment, progress-monitoring, and Tier II mathematics intervention lessons. In each school, two teachers from each grade level, K-2, are participating. One teacher from each grade level was randomly selected to serve as an intervention teacher; the other serves as a comparison teacher.
Bilingual Intervention Scale-Up Project
During the 2009-2010 school year, the Bilingual Tier II Intervention Scale-Up is being implemented in Spanish at six schools in four education service center regions. Components include assessment, mathematics intervention, and progress monitoring. In each school, two teachers from each grade level, K-2, are participating. One teacher from each grade level was randomly selected to serve as an intervention teacher; the other serves as a comparison teacher.
Focus on Mathematics Schools Project
Focus on Mathematics schools are carefully selected schools that have been successfully implementing Tier II of the 3-Tier Mathematics Intervention Model in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Our purpose in working with these schools is to learn more about how campuses go about implementing a response to intervention (RTI) 3-Tier Mathematics model-including assessment, progress monitoring, and intervention-so that “lessons learned” can be shared with other campuses statewide. Focus on Mathematics schools will be available for other schools to visit to see model practices.
